About A Boy | Oakville Newborn Photographer | Robyn S. Russell Photography

Babies! Babies! And more babies!! I’m definitely in a baby mood today. I just found out that my client had her baby (a girl) this morning so I am over the moon for her (and for me since it’s been a little while since I’ve had a newborn in my studio with the fall rush). Don’t get me wrong, I love photographing baby boys too, but since I am surrounded by an abundance of testosterone in my house on a daily basis, having a girl to enjoy is always extra special in my books.

But this post is about a boy; a special little boy named Nathan.

You can already see why he’s so special. He had so much personality and gave me the cutest lil faces while he was awake. But when he slept, he dreamed. He was so peaceful and beautiful. He really melted me to the core.

Sigh. He suited that teddy bear hat so perfectly too. One of my favourite shots of him from the day, for sure.

Cynthia & Mitch, thank you so much for asking me to capture some of the most amazing moments in your life this year. It has been truly humbling watching your family grow; I know it’s been a long time coming … but as we all know, good things come to those that wait. He is your little miracle and precious in every sense of the word. I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for him and you both. Love, Robyn xo

This was my last shot of the day. He was getting ready to go home, but looked so darling in his little onesie, I just couldn’t resist. You know you’re a newborn photographer when …. ;)

Won Ton Soup | Food Photography | Robyn S. Russell Photography

I have never been bugged, stalkedharassed prompted for a recipe so much before in my life (laugh) … so this is LONG overdue for many of you who asked for it. I apologise for the delay. I’ve been so busy with the Christmas rush, but I’m touched that you guys love it so much. And I can’t tell you how easy it is to make. I made this recipe up on my own. It’s pretty easy so I’m not trying to take full credit for this masterpiece (omg, listen to me haha). But what I can tell you is that it’s a really great comfort soup — perfect for cold or sick days — or for those of you who are trying to watch what you eat this time of the year, like I am. This is as skinny as it gets and there are multiple ways to make this (ie: with different types of vegetables and dumplings). So, here goes: Won Ton Soup.

I used a container of Campbell’s 25% Less Sodium Chicken Broth (ready made) in a large pot and added 1 tsp of soya sauce (I really like Kikkoman over VH). I let the broth and sauce cook on medium high heat and used a pinch of black pepper for flavour. While the broth cooked, I cut 8-10 cremini mushrooms, a full head of baby bok choy, and two green onions (whites too) and set aside until the broth started boiling. You can also use kale instead of bok choy (thanks to Sebrina for the awesome tip!).

Now … you can make your own won tons (and I plan on doing it from scratch), but I was in a rush the first time I made this so I grabbed frozen won ton dumplings (pork and coriander) from the grocery. I buy mine from Metro. It’s about $3.00 for a pretty decent sized pack. Best of all, they are very low in fat, sodium, and carbs! Once the broth boiled, I added the dumplings and vegetables to the pot and turned the heat down to a simmer for 3-5 minutes. I saved the green onions for the very end. You really don’t want them to cook. You just want them for a garnish.

Bon appetite everyone! They are definitely kid friendly and approved! I love snacking on this at night instead of popcorn. I don’t always eat the dumplings, but if I do, I usually have 2-3 tops!

And as always, my doors are always open; you’re welcome to pop in for a treat on me! Until next time, Robyn xo

For the Love of Owls | Burlington Newborn Photographer | Robyn S. Russell Photography

Yes, I’m behind in blogging (don’t boo me all at once), but I’m doing my best to get caught up now that the Fall season is behind us! I cannot believe how busy this year has been. The good news is that it means I have a lot to share with you between now and December 31!

Anyway, onto the topic at hand. Meet Ante. First of all, what a cool name, right? Ante. It just rolls off the tongue. Say it with me … Ante. Prounounced “awn-tay”. And sigh. What a gorgeous baby.

Seriously …. those wide eyed shots get me every time! This shot was taken just as we were getting started. Ante soon drifted off into slumber and let me get to work. He was a dream to work with. We had such an organic session … very natural with lots of cream tones. And that foot shot. Sigh.

Mary asked if we could incorporate owls into his session. She even came with hats — oh yes, a client after my heart! And seriously, how cute is this! Ante the Owl. Simply adorable!

Mary, it was amazing having you behind my lens again, this time with your beautiful bundle of joy. I keep thinking about those cute soccer shoes that you brought along with the hats. I bet they fit Ante now!! ;)

Mary & Al, I look forward to many more beautiful moments with your family! You little family of 3 really warmed my heart; I really enjoyed getting to know you over the past 6 months! I will be eagerly watching your family grow! Until then, Robyn xo

Your Best Friend | Burlington Family Photographer | Robyn S. Russell Photography

I’m so happy to blog this session. I was thrilled when Joanne of JetBaby contacted me to capture her and Grommit. We took an every day approach and captured lasting  memories, doing the things they loved to do the most. A real session. True moments captured. I was one happy girl.

Grommit had so much personality. And I could really see it shine in the short time I got to know him. What really moved me was Joanne’s affection for him. He’s been with her family for years — and he’s just that. Family.

Sadly, Grommit is not with us anymore. We knew his time was coming to an end. He was fighting old age and a few battles, but he’s in a better place now. Grommit, you were loved. You made a huge impact to those that loved you. Joanne, I hope I did Grommit justice. He was a beautiful soul, as are you. Robyn xo

Safety First | Newborn Safety Week | Robyn S. Russell Photography

This post is near and dear to my heart. It’s Newborn Safety Week. I felt compelled obligated as a professional photographer who works with a lot of newborns to write about the importance of safe practice when working with babies. So, here goes.

I love newborns. They’re fresh and new. They smell so sweet. And when they smile (even if it’s from gas), it melts my heart. I feel privileged that I’m often called upon to photograph newborns. It’s such a rewarding experience for me, despite the endless poop and pee. But here’s the reality. A baby is not a toy. A baby is a precious human being that cannot speak for itself. Yes, babies are quite resilient, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to abuse them for the sake of pushing boundaries to get “the shot”. Parents put a lot of trust in their photographers to err on the side of caution, so that’s exactly what we must do. Even though you won’t see a lot of intricate posing from me (my personal style as I prefer to keep things extremely natural and organic), I still need to maintain safety at all times. Eyes and hands must always be on a baby. Even if a baby is resting comfortably; if they’re off the floor (ie: on a beanbag), they need to be spotted at all times. Newborns aren’t able to roll over, but it doesn’t mean they can’t roll off a surface if left unattended. And if that happened, it would be absolutely devastating. Not only to a baby and its parents, but also to our industry as a whole.

Here’s the thing. A lot of poses that you see may look easy to you and me, but that’s not always the case. Many are actually composites, where two images are blended to make one master image. And don’t be fooled — we all use Photoshop to turn our visions into reality. Case in point. This particular baby, seen below, couldn’t keep his head up, and why should he? Newborns are typically top heavy. And they have absolutely little to no ability to keep their heads up on their own. Having Daddy’s hand firmly placed to simply lift his baby’s head from slumping did the trick. Baby was safe and we ended up with a beautiful shot — one of their favourite shots from the session!

But safety isn’t just for newborns. I do this with older babies too, who aren’t able to sit on their own who can easily topple over. Again, safety should always come first. Otherwise, what’s the point. This shot is a composite of two images (it was bright so I took a shot of the background as well) and yes, this baby was sitting on a soft piece of sand at the end of October (we’ve had an awesome fall season), but I still felt the need to ensure that a hand was on him at all times. Dad was easy enough to clone out for the resulting image!

I know there are many photographers looking to push the envelope, especially amateur photographers who are coming into the field inexperienced trying to make their mark. But is it really worth it? Putting a newborn baby into a pose that is uncomfortable for them is not cool. If they don’t want to cooperate, move on to another pose, especially if they keep wriggling out of a position, or heaven forbid, they start turning blue! Some babies want to be on their tummy. Some don’t. Some like white noise. Others prefer Phil Collins haha (true story!!). The point I’m trying to make is that you need to make sure you’re acting on behalf of that little baby in your care. Read the signs and use common sense. Treat every baby as if they were your own. A baby will let you know when they’re not happy.

At the end of the day, parents will appreciate the means you’ve taken to practice safety with their little ones. Yes, we all have to start somewhere — but if you’re new in this field, please understand that most of what you see isn’t real. Please take the time to learn about baby posing and safety before you start working with little ones. And parents, please do your research. Ask those important questions before you book a photographer. Most newborns are photographed in the first 5-10 days of life (and there’s a reason for that), but while they’re in such a new and fragile state, please be aware of their needs. That’s all I ask.

Education is a two-way street! Let’s do our part to keep these little ones safe! :)

Cheddar Cheese Muffins | Food Photography | Robyn S. Russell Photography

It’s food time again. Of course, I’m sharing recipes in the throws of a diet and on Halloween. Oh, the torture!! Yes, I did have a wee bite of my creation to see if they were any good and I have to tell you, these bite sized morsels of goodness are ah-mazing! So, before I start feeling sorry for myself that I’m eating chicken and veggies with a side of jello for 2 months straight, let’s get on to the goods, shall we!

This recipe makes 18 regular muffins or 36 mini muffins. I opted to make 12 regular muffins and 12 mini muffins to keep things simple. Don’t worry about making extra that may go bad. They can be popped in your fridge or freezer, which is great when you’re looking for a quick snack or something to go along with a meal at a later date! This recipe comes from one of our favourite recipe books for children called “Feeding Baby“.

Cheddar Cheeese Muffins

10 green onions, roots and ends trimmed
Olive oil for coating
1/2 tsp sea salt (plus more for seasoning)
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsps baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1. Preheat oven to 400F. Rub a baking sheet with oil. Lightly coat the onions with olive oil and place them on the baking sheet and season with salt. Roast for 3-5 minutes until lightly browned. Remove and dice. *Keep an eye on your onions in the oven, they will burn quickly!

2. Decrease oven to 375F. Grease the muffin tins with butter.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together your wet ingredients (milk, buttermilk, and egg). In a separate bowl, combine your dry ingredients (flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/2 tsp salt).

The boys really enjoyed this part of the process LOL!

4. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, cream the butter on high speed until smooth. Switch to low speed, and add the flour mixture, alternating with the milk mixture until smooth. Add the cheese and green onions. Mix just to blend.

5. Use a small ice cream scoop or measure 2 tbsp of batter into each cup for a regular muffin and about 1 tbsp of batter for a mini muffin. Bake on the centre rack of the oven for about 20 minutes for the regular size (15 minutes for the mini) until the tops are golden. Test the centre with a toothpick to see if it comes out clean.

6. Let your muffins cool on a rack for about 5 minutes before serving. Extra muffins can be refridgerated for up to 2 days or frozen for about 2 weeks.

Oh … and whatever you do. Don’t eat raw cornmeal! ;)

And as always, my doors are always open; you’re welcome to pop in for a treat on me! Until next time, Robyn xo
